Reel Life lesson: “Winter is coming,” says the motto of House Stark. While other Houses’ mottos in Game of Thrones speak of the valor and honor of their kin, the Starks speak of being vigilant for unexpected things to come.
Real life lesson: It’s about preparing for disasters. The Starks spend their summers (good days) preparing for the winter when all dark things lurk in the shadows. As with finances, this is building an emergency fund while everything is well. Have at least 3-6 months’ worth of expenses stashed in your bank account to prepare for surprise expenses.
Reel life lesson: “A mind needs books just like a sword needs a whetstone,” answered Tyrion Lannister to Jon Snow who asked him why he reads so much.
Real life lesson: Never stop learning. Education is not limited to the four corners of the classroom. Nowadays, it is not hard to learn when information is one click away. Log out of your social media accounts for a while and educate yourself.
2. Breaking Bad
Reel Life Lesson: Better Call Saul. When the situation got tough for high school chemistry teacher-turned-meth kingpin Walter White and his student-turned-partner Jesse Pinkman, they went to the expert: criminal lawyer Saul Goodman.
Real Life lesson: Always ask the help of a professional so you are fully informed. Seeking professional advice can lessen your risks when it comes to investing or making a big financial decision.
Reel Life Lesson: Walter White succumbing to illegal and immoral acts let him have what he wanted: millions of dollars. As he gets too engrossed on his meth empire, he slowly started losing the thing he loves the most: his family.
Real Life Lesson: There’s always a price to pay. Whatever you do, there will always be consequences. You do good, and you get rewarded. Do what’s harmful and dangerous to others and you get what you give in return.
3. The Walking Dead
Reel Life Lesson: When the characters of this post-apocalyptic zombie series faced the grim world they are in, it was hard for them to accept it. Those who panicked and lost hope ended up dead.
