Traditional banana bread recipes often contain large amounts of sugar and unhealthy fats, making it a less-than-ideal choice for those looking to maintain a healthy diet. But fear not. Here is a simple and delicious way to create a healthier version of this beloved treat.

Banana bread can be a delicious snack; however, most commercially bought banana breads or recipes online are full of sugar, unhealthy fats and processed grains – making them hardly a nutritious choice. By making a few small changes you can enjoy this sweet snack without sacrificing your health goals or your waistline.

Prepare the following ingredients:

  • 3 overripe bananas
  • ¼ cup organic honey
  • 1 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 ½ cup almond meal
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Follow the instructions below:

  • Pre heat oven to 170°C.
  • Whisk together eggs, honey, vanilla and coconut oil.

Replacing butter with coconut oil provides a good serve of healthy fats and the eggs provide a good source of lean protein. Meanwhile, organic honey is full of vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin B6, B3 (niacin), B1 (thiamine), and B2 (riboflavin). The honey will naturally sweeten the banana bread without adding any processed sugars

Fun fact: Vitamin B3 is the active form of niacin and functions as a vital enzyme that aids metabolism.

  • Mash bananas and add to mixture above. Bananas are naturally high in potassium, vitamin B6, manganese and vitamin C.

Fun fact: Manganese aids function in bone growth and wound healing, while aiding enzyme function as well as acting as an antioxidant. It is important for the metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids and cholesterol. Fun fact: Vitamin C promotes a healthy immune system essential for the formation of connective tissue, neurological signalling and energy production.

  • Combine almond meal, baking soda and cinnamon.

Replacing regular white flour which has been repeatedly processed with almond meal provides a good serve of dietary fibre making it a much healthier choice.

Fun fact: Fibre is important for bowel health acting as a cleaning system for the gut and also as a food supply for the healthy bacteria in your digestive tract.

  • Mix all ingredients together.
  • Grease loaf tin with coconut oil, and then pour in mixture.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes at 170°C or until golden brown.

Enjoy this guilt free banana bread for breakfast or a snack, toasted or fresh. Either way, you can’t go wrong.
