Nutritious and shelf-stable food for quarantine

March 18, 2020

GoWell Team

As Luzon undergoes a month-long enhanced community quarantine, our time outdoors has been limited to work and buying necessities. To weather through this challenge, we need to be prepared by stocking up on food items that not only have a long shelf life, but are also nourishing.

Here’s a list of items that you can add to your next grocery run:

1.  Beans and lentils

A great source of protein, canned or dried beans and lentils have a shelf life of 2 to 3 years. Some of the items you can grab are chickpeas, red or yellow lentils, monggo beans, and kidney beans.

2.  Oats

High in fiber and low in fat, oatmeal can last up to 1 to 2 years if left sealed. It’s a versatile food item that you can prepare in different ways such as overnight freezing, microwave, or by simply adding hot water.

3Frozen or canned fruits and vegetables

When all your fresh fruits and vegetable products have been consumed or have gone bad, you can alternatively turn to these non-perishable alternatives when you cannot go for a grocery run.

4. Rice

A Filipino kitchen staple, rice will serve you well nutrition-wise and shelf-wise. It’s the most readily available food item in the grocery, too!

5. Trail mix

A snack more commonly brought outdoors is something you will need now that you are required to stay indoors. Get a variety of nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and dark chocolate that you can snack on while working or studying at home. While it’s always best to be prepared, keep in mind that choosing the right type of food and quantity is also important. Always be mindful of your purchases so you won’t end up hoarding items you don’t really need. And lastly, remember that it is during these times that we need to stay calm, assess the situation clearly, and work together to fight through this pandemic!
