5 Habits for Healthy Social Media Use

Social media is a double-edged sword for your mental health. Take charge by building habits biased towards your mental health and overall wellness.

In the digital age, many Filipinos find themselves constantly connected to social media with 99.2% of Filipino internet users aged 16 to 64 active on social networks. Social media is now a powerful tool that should be used with care as it can either be a confidence booster or a mental health buster.

Social media has its pros and cons. The good news is you can take control. Establish these habits for healthy social media use.

1. Set boundaries.

Social media is addicting.  A study shows 67.7% of all Filipinos use social media to keep in touch with loved ones. It is a habit that's hard to quit especially among a majority of Filipinos who rely heavily on social media to maintain relationships.

While this is one of the key benefits of social media use, it is essential to set boundaries. Limit social media usage to improve in-person relationships and protect mental health and overall well-being.

2. Be intentional.

You have to identify your purpose for using social media. Is it to make connections? Build your brand? or do you use it to overcome moments of boredom? By being intentional, you can avoid getting caught up in mindless scrolling and instead use it based on how it can work for you best.

3. Commit to quality sleep.

Social media lets you stay connected no matter what time or day. You can forge connections with people from the other side of the world. However, with endless connections, there is the threat of disturbed sleep patterns.

Quality sleep is essential to good health. It is non-negotiable. The use of social media before bedtime contributes to sleep disruption and may cause unhealthy sleep patterns, sleep deficiency, and daytime sleepiness. In the long run, this could lead to an increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart attack, and stroke.

4. Choose meaningful connections.

Social media bridges connections not only among acquaintances but influencers too. Choose the connections you build whether with ordinary people or influencers. Remember, you will be exposed to the activities, thoughts, and ideas of those you follow. Somehow, they may affect your mood, mindset, and behavior.

Follow social media accounts that can leave a positive impact on your life. Sun Life is on Facebook, Linkedin, Tiktok, and Instagram. Find us on social to be inspired and motivated on a journey to a brighter life.

5. Take scheduled breaks.

Social media breaks are essential whether it's for just a few minutes or several days.

Stay away from your phone and be fully present. Reconnect physically and build connections while staying unplugged. Make sure that there is life away from social media.

Social media comes with advantages. But just like anything that is misused or abused, it could negatively impact you and your health too. Set limits to social media use to protect your physical and mental health. Be mindful. Stay in charge by following these healthy habits that will mitigate its negative effects.
