Bright Morning - 29 May 2026

Bringing the latest market news closer to you.

Macroeconomy

  • Oil eased from intraday highs after reports that U.S. and Iran agreed to extend their ceasefire and begin nuclear talks, pending President Trump's approval. Meanwhile, U.S. inflation stayed firm in April, reinforcing concerns that price pressures may keep interest rates elevated.
  • Long-term inflation expectations remain stable despite oil-driven price pressures from the Middle East conflict. BSP research shows expectations continue to hover near the upper end of the 2%-4% target range, suggesting inflation remains manageable over the longer term.

Fixed Income

  • Local bond yields were lower by 5 to 15 bps as sentiment was supported by lower oil prices and a well received auction. Longer maturities outperformed although most of the buying interest was seen in the 5-to 10-year maturities.
  • US Treasury yields were lower by as much as 4 bps amid reports of progress on a peace deal between US and Iran. US and Iran have reportedly reached an agreement on a 60-day ceasefire pending Trump's sign off.

Equities

  • Global equities rose +0.22% as markets gained following an extension of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire while investors assessed the latest U.S. inflation data and revisions to economic growth.
  • Philippine shares dipped yesterday, with the PSEi losing 103.30 points (-1.73%) to close at 5,859.94. Global tensions regarding the Strait reopening dampened investor sentiment. MSCi rebalancing set for today may also pressure the local market given substantial outflows expected for several index names.

Bright Idea: Locking in yields at current levels (10-year higher than 7% sounds like a good move to add some stability. We recommend clients to consider adding local bond funds to their portfolios at this point.
