Macroeconomy

  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he will unveil a new round of U.S. sanctions against Iran on Monday, calling them the "toughest" in history. Iran downplayed the threat on Sunday, underscoring the continued tensions between Washington and Tehran.
  • The BSP is widely expected to raise rates for a third consecutive meeting this week as inflation remains elevated. In a BusinessWorld poll, 19 of 24 analysts projected a 25bp hike in the target reverse repurchase rate.

Fixed Income

  • PHP bond yields fell 1-4bps on Thursday, following the rally in US Treasuries as investors looked abroad for direction amid a lack of local market drivers.
  • US Treasury yields climbed on Friday, led by the front end, after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced plans to repurchase long-dated government debt and fund the program through greater short-term bill issuance.

Equities

  • Global equities rose +0.55% as improving business activity data helped bolster growth sentiment while continued policy support measures to stabilize bond markets eased investor concerns over rising yields.
  • The PSEi advanced 1.30% to 6,238, tracking a broader regional rally as expanded U.S. Treasury buybacks eased bond yields, improved risk appetite, and strengthened the peso.
